Meeting of the Minds

Why MOM ?

Installers and retailers have a leg up on the consumer in so many ways, but with my service, information isn’t one of them.  You’re gonna blow them away with your preparation.  Your priorities and expectations will be in place. You’re gonna ask all the right questions at the right times and you’re gonna be there to make sure everything goes down like it’s supposed to.

You’re in control of your carpet installation if you start off with a good plan.  Meeting of the Minds gives you that plan.

There’s several tasks that the installer will provide, but there’s plenty of other tasks that you should take care of.

There’s ways you can gain the installer’s respect and save yourself some money too.  Few people budget for additional charges like moving furniture and vacuuming. That’s what the Meeting of the Minds is for - to get all this stuff out in the open, so there’s no surprises.

Good installers like the idea of working directly with you. There won’t be any middlemen to screw up the communication process. It’s just you, your questions, the installer and his expertise. He’ll give you more valuable input than any salesperson ever could. Since the installer gets his price, he has nobody to blame except himself if there are any problems. And since you pay him directly, you have the opportunity to inspect his work. You must be satisfied before you pay. Both of you know this going in. There will be no money-grabbing salesman knocking down your door as soon as the job is done. And the installer knows he’s not making anything on the sale of the material. Things go so much more smoothly when you take commission out of the equation.

My service is all about connecting you with the few top installers in your town.
Top installers
take full responsibility for their actions. They like to be involved from beginning to end. Unlike Retailers’ installers who come in blind on the day of the Installation and have to work from Salesman’s numbers, top installers like to take their own measurements.
Top installers will want to see your sample(s).  They’ll be preaching the practical aspects of selection and most will recommend higher quality carpet and pad even though they’re not making any money on the sale. They do this because it’s correct; it’ll hold up better and have less chance of wrinkling with age.
Top installers will see potential problems that you and I would miss.
Top installers who will go over seam placement with you in detail.
Top installers like to look it over. Let them. Then anything that goes wrong is on them. If you don’t let them see it, it’s on you.  Give your installer this one opportunity to spell out any additional charges over and above a basic installation.

Bottom line: You need a top installer or you don’t want to do carpet.

Hopefully you two will bond and become a team. Sometimes people don’t hit it off. It happens. No problem. If you’ve tried to cooperate and it just doesn’t work out, I’ll find you somebody else.

The most important reason of the Meeting of the Minds is that it lets you and the installer work out a plan on paper. Together you’ll fill out the Installation Agreement. I wrote it for you, the consumer. Actually it benefits both parties. With it, you’ll be in control. Without it, you won’t.

Why the Checklist ?

Installers have a checklist designed to remind them of the important aspects of carpet installation. So why can’t Homeowners have their own checklist designed to remind them of the important aspects of carpet installation?

So I put together the following Consumer’s Checklist and associated Installation Agreement. It’s all designed to prevent problems before they happen. It’s a lot easier preventing problems than fixing them. Especially with retail installations – it’s way too late to complain after the install. You can bet the store will have a bunch of rehearsed excuses.

The Consumer’s Checklist walks you through the questions you need to ask during the planning of the installation. Take your time and ask them all. If the installer gets irritated, just blame it on me.

Put your initials by the tasks that are your responsibility and his initials by his jobs. Take plenty of notes.
Then sit down together at the Kitchen table and fill out the Installation Agreement.
Do it this way, and you won’t have any problems come Installation Day.
